Film Appreciation

A short film appreciation workshop to Deconstruct, Understand, and Appreciate the Magic of Cinema; while learning about the spectacle, struggles, & power of this Art form.

As film-buffs we passionately love and fiercely criticize the movies we watch. What we don’t realize is that our taste in cinema is also limited by our understanding of it.

Just as a psychologist’s reading of the human mind, or a chess-player’s strategy in competition are all acquired skills, so is the understanding and appreciation of films

A classical music concert is more enjoyable if you understand the nuances of the genre; a game of cricket more fulfilling if one can read the field set-up and predict the next delivery.

In this 3 months ( Mon-Fri; 3hrs per day) Film Appreciation Course, we will break down the language of cinema in a manner that is understandable to even the most unaware.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS COURSE

  • Understand the powers/characteristics of Cinema.
  • Learn how and why it is so influential.
  • Learn to Analyse or “Read” a film.
  • Receive an Certificate on completion of the workshop (minimum 80% attendance)

SYLLABUS

The scope of film appreciation is vast and nebulous. Traditional film schools spend nearly their entire first semester or more just on understanding films and their historical development. This workshop being  of a much shorter duration, will focus only on the essence and aim to achieve a solid understanding of the nature of this medium and its language rather than just skim through each and every topic related to film appreciation.
The workshop will attempt to uncover this essence by analysing a variety of specially curated films and stepping into the shoes of the filmmaker.
